Perfume is a perishable product. Like wine, it’s damaged by light & extremes of temperature. As the vast majority of perfume trading takes place in New York, many perfume discounters take the cheapest option when importing to New Zealand, which is of course, sea-freight. It’s four weeks from New York to Auckland by sea & COVID related delays mean quite a bit of time on the docks. Even with no delays, they’re in metal containers, at sea for a month – they get hot.
CLIMATE CONTROL
At DESIGNER DIRECT we fly our fragrance. It comes directly from our suppliers’ climate controlled warehousing, to our climate controlled stores, ensuring that the product you buy is exactly as the designer intended. Heat damaged fragrance (we call it ‘Baked’) has its life shortened dramatically. Colour change is the first indicator – they’re darker. The second thing to change is the smell. It’s comparable to a ‘turned’ chardonnay – smelling more like sherry than wine.
Higher end Department Stores look after their product, as we do. But we do beat them up on price.

STORE RETURNS
Some perfume discounters deal in Store Returns. They’re genuine & cheap but one never knows how they’ve been stored or transported.
